They Might Be Giants?
Who are They Might Be Giants?
Glad you asked. They Might Be Giants consists of John Linnell and John Flansburgh,
a two man group that got their start back in the early 80's. Blending a unique style of
pop, folk and good old fashioned rock and roll, They Might Be Giants are a band all of their
own. Often imitated, never duplicated (to quote an overused expression), their Nerd Rock stylings
are enjoyed the world over.
You may have never heard of them before, but you probably have heard them before.
Back in the early 90's, the closest thing that the John's ever got to a hit was Istanbul (Not Constantinople),
off of their masterpiece 3rd album, Flood. Rolling Stone called Flood one of the best albums of 1990,
and it is still often viewed as the best by Giantheads around the globe.
Since then, They Might Be Giants have returned to the underground (sort of)
music scene as their fan base continues to grow. Will they ever hit it big again? Probably not. Do they care?
Not at all. Since the beginning, They Might Be Giants has simply been a lighthearted musical effort, something done for the
fun, not for the "music" or for the money. And by not doing so is what makes the music so good. The energy is always there,
even after 13 or so years, and the music is quite enjoyable no matter what mood you are in.
Let's hope that the John's will keep on enjoying what they do to continue to release more and more albums, so that even more fans
can grow, and help They Might Be Giants grow into one of the largest bands that no one has ever heard of. :)
And who are you?
My name is Adam Varn and I discovered the wonderful sounds of TMBG back in 1996 when I happened to pick up
a $4 used copy of Flood off a friend recommendation. I have since purchased all of their albums (EP's not included). I view them as a wondeful band who despite
not making much money off of their choice of profession, still enjoy doing it enough to keep the fans happy.
I have attempted to spread the word about TMBG around to friends and family, and have learned that most people either love them
or hate them. I don't care personally, I just want to help the fan base grow. I saw TMBG finally live on 9/11/99, and it wa by far the best
concert I have ever been to. You can read a synopsis about it here. Hopefully, I can see them again soon.
I may add more to this page later, depending on if the need is neccesary. Please feel free to send any questions or comments to me here.
